So its arrived.    Three attempts to call Orange (UK) to get the phone registered (about 45 minutes later) and we're set.

So first impressions -

  • Where Is Live Messenger?  - can't find it anywhere.
  • Active Sync easy to setup,   email syncing really easily.
  • Internet explorer not loading any pages (!!!!),   can't work this one out  (???) given the above.
  • Little slide out keyboard - fab.
  • Form factor - phone is very THICK, surprised at chunkiness.
  • Man - the screen is amazing,   font a little too big I thought.
  • It has the GREEN colour scheme - great...
  • GPS Intermediate driver control panel not switched on by default.
  • WIFI connection a bit hit and miss,   couldn't work out if I was using WIFI or phone network.
  • Device seems, very fast....
  • Keypad, is V.small.
  • I thought Live Search Mobile was pre-installed?
  • Tried to use Word Mobile,   how the hell can I create a new document...
  • It ain't doing EDGE where I am,  I'm just getting the G GPRS icon.
  • Internet Explorer not working - I'll say it again.

OK, so mostly good.    We'll see if in the cold light of day if my list changes.

Glad you like your new toy Richard. :-)

Orange have taken to removing Messenger. Certainly not present on the M3100 either. There are rumours that they will be providing their own chat app.

You might want to check that the font size is set to "Normal" in Settings - Accessibility. Probably is, but stranger things have happened.

> GPS Intermediate driver control panel not switched on by default.
Odd one this - seems to be off by default in many OEM builds. You know how they hate to "confuse" us poor users. There seems to be an issue where Smartphone devices don't have the necessary Control Panel. Not sure if this still applies to WM6 Smartphone - I only have the "PocketPC" variant. The WM5 issue is referred to in http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2006/06/07/620387.aspx

Problem and workaround discussed by Jason in http://blogs.msdn.com/jasonlan/archive/2007/04/20/windows-mobile-6-standard-can-t-create-new-documents.aspx

Again as I don't have a physical device I can't be sure, but two possibilities spring to mind. i) Orange don't have Edge on the base station covering your area, as they don't in the cell covering my house :-( ii) Orange have decided to change the icon and only have the G (cause G, E, U, H etc can be so confusing apparently). They changed the U on the 3100 for 3G (or 3) depending on which icon you are looking at. Part of the initial configuration that runs after a hard reset. If you want to avoid the customisation do a hard reset, and then a soft one before the config runs.

Sadly can't help you with this one. Proxies set where they shouldn't be perhaps?
